Parliament drops Amendment 171

On 25 May 2021 news broke that during the trilogue negotiations on the CAP reform, the infamous amendment 171, restricting the labelling of plant-based dairy alternatives, was finally dropped.

ECJ ruling against calcium algae in plant-based milk

On 29 April 2021, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) published its ruling in the case Natumi GmbH v Land Nordrhein-Westfalen. The case revolved around the question whether Natumi is allowed to use the alga Lithothamnium calcareum, an alga naturally rich in calcium, in its organic plant-based milks.

On 19-22 October, the plenary of the European Parliament will vote on two amendments within the framework of the Common Agriculture Policy reform, amendments 165 and 171, that would significantly affect the labelling of plant-based foods. Stakeholders are preparing for a last attempt to avert the ‘Veggie Burger Ban’ at EU-Parliament level.
